“I Am What I Play” Interview With Duran Duran’s Roger Taylor

By Saatchi Gallery Art and Music Magazine · March 19, 2012

We recently launched our Guest Curator program and lucky for us, Roger agreed to be one of the first.

For music enthusiasts around the globe, Roger Taylor requires no introduction. Best known as Duran Duran’s drummer, some may be surprised to know that his career as a DJ began over a decade ago.

What track never fails to fill the dance floor/get the studio phones lighting up?
Nearly 30 years old and still a favorite across the board ‘Blue Monday’ and possibly the best dance record ever made to this day.

What’s the worst dance floor-clearer/howls of protest-inducer you’ve ever played?
I am such a people pleaser that I’ve yet to launch a ‘rotten egg’ onto the dance floor.

Is DJIng a science, or is it closer to being an art curator, only with records, or is it more instinctual and ‘in the moment’ than any of that?
That’s the great thing about dj’ing it’s totally ‘in the moment’. I usually have a set list but will go off in a totally different direction once the adrenalin kicks in and of course one gets taken on a journey that’s totally dependent on the vibe in the room. There’s definitely a science to it but also some art involved and, I would hope, a natural ear for harmonics and beats.

As a musician, how does playing other people’s music compare with being on a stage, on in a studio, playing your own?
Two totally different worlds, Duran Duran have an amazing catalogue of music that people want to hear every night and we live for the response we get from our audience to our songs. For me, djing is refreshing because I get to play other peoples’ songs all night. I’ve heard people say that it’s a bit like surfing and I think that’s true, you hit a peak with certain records and try to keep riding the wave.

Is DJing ever a lonely pursuit?
Yes it can be the rest of the room is partying and you are behind the decks sweating over what the next record is going to be so I do like to take someone out with me, I am currently djing with my son we bounce ideas off one another.

Who was the most influential DJ on you as a youngster?
Had to be John Peel as a youngster but then I saw Frankie Knuckles spin in the late 80′s then Sven Vath in the early 90′s they were all kind of life changing times.

Do you think the age of courageous/maverick DJs to some extent died with John Peel? Yes

Would you ever take (and honour) a request even if you weren’t personally that keen on the record? No. When people come up to the booth shouting requests at me I usually pretend that I can’t hear what they are saying…ha ha, I’m giving my secrets away now! Goodbye.

Duran Duran's Taylor: I wanted to play between the sticks

4th Apr 2012. By Paul Brown

Legendary Duran Duran musician Roger Taylor might have never carved out a career on the drums - if he'd made it between the sticks for Villa.

Double Grammy award winning ace Taylor had a string of hits in the 1980s and 1990s like Planet Earth, Hungry Like the Wolf, Girls on Film, Rio, Wild Boys, Ordinary World and James Bond soundtrack theme tune View to a Kill.

In fact, Duran Duran are recognised as one of the leaders in the New Romantic era and helped shape the MTV generation with a string of arty music videos.

But they might have achieved success without Taylor if he'd fulfilled his No.1 boyhood aim of playing for the claret and blues.

He used to attend every home match with his father Hugh and practiced at home incessantly in his goalkeeping kit but at 5ft 9 he never grew tall enough to realise his dream.

He said: "Villa mean everything to me. I come with my dad still. He used to bring me when I was a kid - about four-years-old.

"We used to sit on the Holte End. He used to sit me on the bar and I remember being freezing cold throughout my childhood watching the Villa. But the games warmed me up!

"I started in the days of Charlie Aitken, the record appearance maker who was the crux of the team.

"Colin Withers was the goalkeeper. That was my first ambition - being the Villa keeper.

"I used to dream of being in between the sticks for the claret and blues. I practiced for hours and hours and hours, catching balls but I never grew tall enough.

"I took up the drum sticks instead and the rest is history. It wasn't a bad alternative because you don't have to retire from music when you're in your 30s."

Taylor did eventually make his debut at Villa Park, however, when Duran Duran played a sell-out charity concert at the illustrious stadium in 1983.

It was a moment he insists he will never forget.

He continued: "I finally made my debut here - but as a drummer.

"It was such an amazing experience for me. It was great. It was the next best thing to actually putting on the shirt and playing for Villa."

The 1980s - Duran Duran's golden age - also holds great memories for Taylor when it comes to his favourite players.

He picks out Andy Gray, Villa's talismanic striker and PFA Young Player and Player of the Year from 1977 as his all-time hero.

He continued: "There have been so many great players at this amazing football club. Andy Gray stands out as a great player of the 1980s, which means a lot to me because it was a super era professionally with Duran Duran too.

"He was such a strong, brave and iconic striker, one you could watch all day and marvel at.

"I really used to love seeing him in action.

"Ashley Young was a great player during his time and I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Gabby Agbonlahor through the years too, growing up from the academy."

But what of the claret and blue future?

He added: "I think we still have a bright future. We just need to dig in this season and then we go places next term. There's room for growth."

-Justamente, vino a pinchar discos...

He visto a Luis Suárez, es genial, increíble.

Legendary Music Idols
Duran Duran's Roger Taylor...

Monday, 21 January 2013

Изображение

Duran Duran's Roger Taylor who has come from the drum to the decks.

So Roger, from drumming in one of the biggest bands the music world has ever seen and loved to DJing around the globe these days in super clubs - what made you want to get behind the decks in the first place? Has DJing always been at the back of your mind?
"Hi Dan, I've always had an interest dance music and electronic music, right back to the days of the first Chic Corporation 12" records and of course Kraftwerk. So when dance music and DJ culture really took off in the late 80s and early 90s, it was something that I just got into..."

How did you hook up with Jake Roberts, your partner in crime, who, as well his cool production work that people like DJ Sven Vath has drooling, also produced soundscapes for films such as Batman Begins and Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy?
"It was during my 'Hiatus' frum Duran Duran in the 90s when I started working with Jake. We formed a dance orientated band called Freebass and then went on to release a number of Techno / House records under the name 'Funkface'. We kept in touch over the years, and kind of slipped into DJing. Just having fun, mixing our own tracks with other people's music..."

You were spotted on the dancefloors at suchfamous New York clubs' such as 'Danceteria', The Limelight and 'Area' - what were those days like? Who were you partying with?
"Amazing - from what I can remember! Actually I do remember hearing 'New Order's 'Blue Monday' for the first time in 'Danceteria' whilst Madonna danced next to me - an incredible moment, and that record really blew me away and whenever we play it, it still goes down a storm..."

Duran Duran - 70 million records sold, 18 American hit singles and 30 UK Top tunes - how did the band get together in the first place?
"Just through friends, I think we were drawn together by an unstoppable will to succeed..."

And who wore the most make up?
"I think I'll let you decide that one..."

How would you describe your DJing style today?
"Our roots lie in house and electro, but what makes a great record are a great bass line and drum. I think they are the most two most important things, but I do like vocals and melody."

What other DJs do you rate out in clubland?
"I love what Justice has been doing over the last couple of years. Close to perfection. Frankie Knuckles, Coxy, Sven...just masters..."

So you once wanted to be a goalkeeper for Aston Villa, do you still follow 'The Villains'?
"Of course, one of the first things I will dowhen I return home is go and see the boys..."

What record that you created with Duran Duran has made you the proudest? Album and Single please...
"'Rio' and ' 'Niterunner'...

Who took the most girls back to the hotel back in the day?
"Ha ha - that would be telling..."

Blingest party you all went to ever?
"The launch of the Bond movie 'View To A Kill - no expense spared, right in the middle of the boom years, stupendous..."

If your house was on fire, what one record would you grab before jumping out the window?
"Chic's ' Good Times'

Who has been the most famous person you've met in your illustrious career?
"Princess Diana"

What were the nu-romantic days like, were you hanging out with anyone who went on to become pop stars and what tunes were you grooving to?
"I used to hang out with Boy George before he went on to greater things as an artist and DJ. The great thing about the clubs in those early days was the breadth of the music, the DJs would draw upon any music - you could could hear a David Bowie record next to a Sex Pistols song followed by a rare 12" disco mix just imported from Studio 54. Actually, Nick was a great DJ in thise halcyon days, he was an early pioneer of the eclectic style...

What are your memories from Live Aid?
"Not great, it was really the end of Duran Duran... we were all going in different directions..."

You've toured the world a hundred times over, what countries do you still get excited about returning to?
"Italy is great. We seem to be like like The Rolling Stones to the Italian public..."

Who are the craziest fans out there?
"Argentina - in a great way"

If you could remix any record that's ever been made, what would you choose?
"Tough, but I would ove to get my hands on some of the original Jim Morrison 'Doors' vocals..."

I am sure I threw some shapes at Pacha in Ibiza this summer whilst you were DJing, what was that like for you and how do you think the island has changed over the years?
"I think I threw some shapes too! Yes amazing, it was so great to be able to DJ in one of the great Meccas of fance music and be accepted and received so well. The island has changed a lot, but the great thing is that Ibiza still lives and breathes dance culture, whether you are in San Antonio or in a fashionable beach club like Blue Marlin. It's all about the music..."

So your residency at infamous members club The Met Bar and Cuckoo Club - must have seen some crazy stuff going on there?
"It's all tucked well and truly under my hat!"

So you were in the studio not so long ago working with Timbaland and Justin Timberlake, what were those dudes like?
"Very cool guys, they came to the table with a lot of repect for our history as a band..."

So how's it going with the band at the moment, what are the plans?
"New material for next year and then just get going again..."

When you gonna stop?
"When we are fit to drop."

"Thank you Dan, Roger x"

Duran Duran's Roger Taylor

Изображение

For music enthusiasts around the globe, Roger Taylor requires no introduction. Best known as Duran Duran’s drummer, some may be surprised to know that his career as a DJ began over a decade ago.

While on break from the band in the early 90’s, Roger and a friend teamed up to produce music and DJ together. They released a string of underground dance records, culminating with "Love Is Like Oxygen,” which was a Top 10 hit on the U.K. dance charts.

For the past few years, Roger has had a residency at London’s celebrity hot spot The Met Bar, performing for the likes of Slash (Guns N’ Roses), David Gray, Marilyn Manson, and Joaquin Phoenix, just to name a few. Most recently, Roger was part of Louie Vega's residency at the Blue Marlin in Ibiza not only as a guest DJ, but also part of an impromptu electronic drumming session while Mr. Vega was on the decks.

Playing an eclectic mix of Rock, Hip Hop, various forms of House, up-to-the-minute dance tunes and even a bit of 80’s Electro, Roger always delivers scintillating sets that keep dance floors pumping.

Roger sights influences stemming from long nights in New York’s infamous 80's dance clubs, such as Danceteria, The Limelight, and Area - aswell as the now legendary Rum Runner Club, where Roger formed Duran Duran with John Taylor and Nick Rhodes.

Frequent trips to club mecca Ibiza over the years have also cemented Roger’s love for dance music. Hearing DJ superstars such as Frankie Knuckles, Carl Cox, and Danny Tenaglia, left resounding effects on the music that shapes his sets today.

Having been with Duran Duran since the beginning, Roger is an integral part of the 70 million records sold, 18 American hit singles & 30 UK Top 30 Tunes. His passion for electronica played a key part on their new album, Red Carpet Massacre, while in the studio with Timbaland, Nate ‘Danja’ Hills and Justin Timberlake.

If Roger’s success as a drummer with Duran Duran is any indication of what is in store for us when he hits the decks, revelers on dance floors all over the world are in for a real treat.

Duran Duran's Roger Taylor Trades the Skins for the Decks

By Ken Scrudato , April 24, 2013

All the best rock stars are multi-dimensional. Ron Wood is a painter, Lenny Kravitz is an interior designer, Ozzy is a philosopher…and Duran Duran drummer Roger Taylor is a rather fashionable DJ. Of course, you remember him from such Simmons-drum-pad-driven classics as “Girls on Film” and “The Reflex”. But in the '90s he took to the decks and never looked back, even scoring a UK top ten dance hit with “Love is Like Oxygen.” In between Duran Duran regroupings, he trots the globe, spending a lot of time, naturally, in Ibiza, and holding a regular residency and London’s Met Bar. With gigs this week at Chicago’s SpyBar (25th) and the Top of the Standard in New York (27th), we managed to sit him still for a chat.

How did you come to start DJing? Do you now consider it as a career?

I was going to so many clubs at one point in my life that I just literally stumbled into the booth one night and started spinning with a friend. I loved the feeling that I was somehow controlling the vibe in the room. I was also producing dance music at the time so it all felt kind of destined.

Does it seem perfectly natural to be a DJ? After all, like DJs, drummers are the people hidden away in the back doing the hard work of actually helping everyone get their groove on.

Yes, it felt very similar to being the drummer in a band. I seem to thrive as the guy at the back who's actually very important but can also go somewhat unnoticed. I think I have a very juxtapositional personality.

What do you love most about DJing?

That moment when two records mesh beautifully together, both in beat and in harmony...usually an accident, and you think ‘how did that happen?’

What’s your favorite city to DJ?

New York, just because it's my favorite city in the world.

What does your playlist look like? Are people expecting you to just play Roxy Music and Chic songs?

I started off very eclectic in style but as I moved up to bigger clubs I embraced a longtime love of house music. After all, if you’re booked to play to play to 2000 people in a nightclub in Rome on a Saturday night, you can't get up and play 'Wordy Rappinghood'. Some people still can't get beyond the fact that it's Roger from Duran behind the decks and can sometimes have certain expectations of what I will be playing…and are somewhat shocked when I start playing obscure French House music.

Duran Duran were a DJs dream, with a zeitgeist-defining remix of almost every single. As a DJ now, what current acts and tracks to you represent the epitome of cool?

I've always been a fan of Daft Punk and am really enjoying their collaboration with Nile Rodgers. I'm loving 'Get Lucky'. I've also been impressed by the Deadmau5 phenomenon in recent years and those Swedish chaps Axwell, Ingosso, and Angello. I call them the 'Abba' of dance music. And Disclosure are doing a pretty amazing job of re-inventing house music in the year 2013, which is no mean feat in itself.

Duran Duran rose up through a blitz of trend consciousness. “Planet Earth” even name checks the New Romantic movement. Are you aware of music having kind of lapped itself? That you can play songs from the '30s, '50s, '80s, and now without ever drawing the ire of trendoids? After all, you could probably play Ace of Base at Le Bain and no one would flinch.

You’re probably right about Ace Of Base, and yes music has certainly travelled around in a big circle. Artists like La Roux and the Killers owe more than a little to the early Duran sound.

What is your favorite club of all time? And your current favorite?

Pacha Ibiza, for me, is the ultimate super club of all time, but Cielo in New York is my current fave...I love the sound system there.

Are the other members of the band jealous of your new career? Are you the one holding up the next album?

I don't sense any jealousy. Nick has numerous art and music projects on the go, John has recently become a best selling author and Simon is a busy and competitive sailor. But there definitely is a next album. It's already in the works.

Duran Duran were obviously an exceedingly provocative entity—the puffy blouses, the glorious hair, the white-boys-copping-funk, the S&M videos. Do you think it’s possible for anything in the context of music to still be provocative?

Very difficult, as it does seem that everything provocative has been done. But people most likely thought the same thing once Elvis had been filmed below the waist.

What’s your favorite Duran album and favorite song?

Has to be the Rio album. It's become a classic of its period. And ‘Save A Prayer’ will always hold huge emotional weight for me.

What is your idea of the perfect night out?

My favorite evening is actually a wild night in with my 20-month-old son, eating pizza and watching Peppa Pig and Thomas the Tank Engine.
